Sustainable Urbanism
How do mixed-used developments contribute to more sustainable communities?
In Sustainable Urbanism by Farr it is summarized that mixed-used developments contribute to more sustainable communities. Mixed-use neighborhoods provide communities and regions that compact housing types and day to day needs (like stores, restaurants, activity facilities, etc.) together to allow for higher density per acre ratio. Increased population density per acre helps support the market and need to improve public transit, which then increases the desire for people to use these services and walk to work. In turn this decreases the use of personal automobiles, time sat in traffic and amount of pollution distributed into the atmosphere. This all contributes to increased sustainability and opportunity to integrate these infrastructures further, reducing carbon generation and energy use compared to single-family housing developments. Overall mixed-used developments help decrease the amount of resource use and improves the quantity of them, benefiting the planet as a whole.
How is quality if life improved by sustainable urbanism?
Sustainable urbanism allows for several opportunities to serve the needs of individuals through providing independence and access for all ages with a high-quality design neighborhood and surrounding areas. Sustainable urbanisms consist of sustainable corridors that supplies a connection between two destinations that requires few cars and increases the use of public transit and walking, increasing amount of time people have connecting with nature. This includes the exposure to natural light, fresh air and water. Farr notes that "disconnect from nature is increasingly thought to contribute to a number of psychological harm, such as increased stress and attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)... A sedentary lifestyle - one with little built-in daily physical activity - is also a big factor in our well documented obesity epidemic." Sustainable urbanisms are built to connect people with nature, through implementing active-living and encouraging daily outdoor activities like walking and sight seeing. Also through sustainable urbanism the importance of seeing and understanding how resources flow is not only being noted but systems are being implemented. Wastewater systems for example allow human settlements "the ability to see and experience where resources are produced and where they go after they are used". These activities and awareness promote human quality of life by better integrating humans with the natural systems of the earth around us.
What is an example of sustainable urbanism in Boston?
Boston is one of the top cities that has been implementing sustainable design whether that be in new construction or renovations making sure that they innovate sustainable ideals in practice and process so that their measures include social benefits and have an impact beyond the site. Boston is built like a sustainable urbanism, it can be found pretty much almost everywhere among the city, but that may just be my thoughts because I am from Texas where communities are dense, producing several single-family housing, except in the downtown areas. Boston include several mixed-used buildings that have commercial at street level and living on top. Within walking distance a resident or visitor can hop on the local transportation or even walk to their next destination. From a persons current location to their destination, in Boston, they are likely to encounter one of the cities local parks or plazas. These are all parts that contribute to sustainable urbanism.
